Four years ago, I started my journey as a medical educatee in the Jacobs Schoolhouse of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the Academy at Buffalo. My medical didactics started with the toughest course of all. Anatomy! And my worst nightmare came true during my starting time test for the course. My laptop battery died in the middle of the exam. I had to stop taking the exam in society to find a suitable charger. Rather than focusing on the answers to difficult homo anatomy questions, I kept hoping and praying that my battery on this old and dying laptop would final till the end of the exam.
Definitely not the best way to start the virtually challenging year at the medical school, where the corporeality of information that gets thrown at you lot is considered equivalent to drinking from a burn down hose. At present imagine doing that, with limp easily and useless legs, on a paralyzed body, stuck in a motorized wheelchair. And exercise you care to know how that happened?
At the historic period of 21, I suffered a spinal cord injury, after existence hit by a drunk driver on my neighborhood route. Following many months of rehabilitation, I returned to the community with a center full of hope, but soon I realized how difficult it is for a quadriplegic person to thrive in this order, designed for and ruled past athletic individuals. But what made me nonetheless hang on to my dream of becoming a doctor was the beloved and support I received from my friends, families and even strangers who believed in me.
One such wonderful support came from the Travis Roy Foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with spinal cord injuries. It was the laptop I received from the foundation that put an finish to that nightmare for good, and allowed me to take subsequent medical school exams with peace of mind. Information technology was a not bad support at that fourth dimension, every bit I embarked on a journey through an already expensive bookish pursuit. The laptop has helped me during my bones science courses, specially to accept exams, as well as my clinical rotations in the hospitals and outpatient clinics.
So now after four years, upon my graduation from the medical school, I desire to convey my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the foundation who work tirelessly to make the globe a amend place for individuals similar me. And to all those bang-up souls who provide their unconditional support for the great cause of this foundation. You lot may non go to see the smile you put on all of our faces, but know for sure that all you lot do every twenty-four hours has a tremendous impact on our happiness and success!
Cheers!
Farzana

On July 22, 2018 when I was competing in Montana's Big Sky State Games in a mountain bike effect, I went over the handlebars of my bike, breaking my neck at the C6 and C7 level and sustained a substantial spinal cord injury leaving me a quadriplegic. I underwent surgery to stabilize my neck, spent ten days in intensive care and iv months in rehab at Craig Infirmary.
When I got out of the hospital and back to my quondam bed, I realized how uncomfortable it was and I was very concerned near getting pressure sores. With the Travis Roy Foundation Grant that I was awarded, I was able to purchase a Majestic 3 mattress with an adjustable base. My Regal 3 mattress was built using technology specifically designed to prevent pressure sores and skin pause down. The adjustable base of operations is a bang-up feature allowing me to heighten and lower my caput and anxiety into multiple positions which is overnice for apportionment and comfort. Information technology is difficult to put in words how much I appreciate the Travis Roy Foundation for their financial help and making my life so much better.

This gift has enabled us to modify our bathroom for our son Kiland. In 2013, Kiland suffered a serious spinal cord injury (level C6) in a diving accident. He is unable walk and has limited utilize of his hands. After his injury, access to our bath and the use of the shower was extremely difficult and frustrating for him. Nosotros took off the doors to our walk in shower, but he still had to transfer to a bench. Balancing on this bench wasn't ideal and he couldn't plow the knobs, so I would accept to aid him with his showers. Now, at 18 years of age, he is wanting more independence and privacy. With the modification and roll in shower he is able to take a full shower without my help. He merely rolls his shower chair into the shower and relaxes in individual. Post spinal cord injury my "life" has changed. Maneuvering around home is ever a formidable task. My wife constantly picks-upwardly after our 2 daughters (ages 5 & 9), but it is like shoveling during a snowfall storm…….minimal results. My girls fill the business firm with love and joy, but continually litter the flooring with books, toys, shoes. All of which brand wheelchair mobility rough. Fortunately, nosotros are now able to utilize our downstairs (family room, toy room, kitchen) due to a newly constructed ramp. I can now roll around my holding far more efficient. This foundation provided me the ability to acheive farther independence, without their assist and support this could not have happened. Cheers for all your much needed back up.
Thanks,
